Stanfa's Goal Lifts Lady Reds Over Pointers 1-0

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's soccer team faced UW-Stevens Point in the middle of their three-game home stand on Wednesday. Both teams took a 0-0 score down the wire until Joanne Stanfa's goal in the 89th minute propelled the Lady Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Pointers, which also halted their four-game win streak.  The Lady Reds entered halftime down 10-6 in shots before they returned the favor with 10 of their own in the second half en route to a 17-13 advantage. Stanfa and Washelesky each peppered four shots for the Carthage offense.

Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek, who stopped seven shots in the contest, logged her second shutout of the season. UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski also registered seven saves in a complete-game effort.

The victory ups Carthage's record to 7-3, 0-0 CCIW while the Pointers fall to 6-3, 0-0 WIAC.

Furmanek notched five of her seven saves in the first half to keep things 0-0 at intermission. Her two second-half stops were the spark plug Carthage needed to register a goal. The first one occurred in the 85th minute off the ensuing yellow card assessed to Nicole Nitti.

The Lady Reds used that momentum when Stanfa rebounded her initial blocked shot on the left side. Stanfa drove the ball 20 yards up field before she fired a shot past Peplinski in the 89th minute to give the Lady Reds a 1-0 advantage.

UW-Stevens Point responded with possession, which resulted in Gracie Wendel's shot that was stopped by Furmanek in the final minute to give Carthage breathing room. UW-Stevens Point couldn't make anything of their corner kick in the final seconds, which helped secure a 1-0 victory for the Lady Reds.

Two of the three yellow cards assessed belonged to the Lady Reds (Stanfa and Nitti).

Carthage will open CCIW play at Art Keller Field against North Central College (Ill.) on Saturday, September 30 at 5:00 p.m.
