DE PERE, Wis. – The Carthage College men's soccer team suffered a tough defeat in their final non-conference tune-up before the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season begins, falling in overtime at St. Norbert College, 1-0.
Coming into the match with the same 5-3-1 records, the loss sends the Red Men to 5-4-1, while the Green Knights move to 6-3-1.
Carthage dominated much of the match with a 15-6 advantage in shots and holding the Green Knights without a shot on target through the first 90 minutes.
Carthage had a number of chances to go ahead in regulation, however all seven of the Red Men's shots on target were turned away by goalkeeper Josh Koleske.
"It was one of those days when you say, did that just happen?" said head coach
Steve Domin after the loss, "I don't know if I have been apart of a more lopsided game where we owned some much possession and didn't win."
Carthage added two more shots on target including a one-on-one chance in the 95
th minute that Koleske once again came up with a save on.
"I wish I could say one of our guys was the man of the match, but really their goalkeeper and centerback were. And if you don't score you can't win," stated the head coach. "Conversely, I don't think anyone on our side played poorly and we were across the face of their goal a ton. It's an unforgiving game."
On the ensuing counter, the Green Knights' Jon Gregory swung a cross from the corner to the top of the six-yard box that Logan Block headed past
Niko Mavrogiannis for the 96
th minute game-winner.
It was St. Norbert's only shot on target in the game.
The Red Men will return home to open their CCIW title defense on Saturday, September 30
th as the Red Men host North Central College at 7:30 p.m. at Art Keller Field. Saturday is Carthage's 2017 Homecoming and the day will begin with the annual Alumni Game hosted by
Steve Domin at Art Keller Field at 9:30 a.m.
"We will need to dust this one off quick," noted Domin. "North Central is a way better team and it will take a perfect game to get a result. "
