Women's Volleyball Splits Day Two Of Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic

WINONA, Minn. – The Carthage College women's volleyball team completed their opening weekend with a split on Saturday at the Ground Round Sugar Load Classic, as the Lady Reds defeated the Norse of Luther College and fell to the hosts, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.
 
The split give Carthage a 3-1 record following the opening weekend, while Luther finished 2-2 and Saint Mary's went 3-1 as well.
 
Carthage 3, Luther 1
After taking the first set, the Lady Reds rebounded from a second set loss to take the match in four [25-23, 24-26, 25-11, 25-19].
 
Carthage dominated most of the match with 53 kills and a .184 hitting percentage, which included two sets over .300, to Luther's 37 kills and .099 attack.  Carthage also added 13 aces in the four-setter and five blocks.
 
Megan Behrendt led the Lady Reds with 14 kills, however Shannon Kebisek may have had the most impressive match of the day with 11 kills and six service aces. 
 
Megan Fallert added 11 kills and tied with Mikaela Grunze with three blocks, while libero Luci Krenzke had a match-high 21 digs.
 
Saint Mary's 3, Carthage 2
The Lady Reds dropped their only match of the weekend in the finale after taking a 2-1 lead, only to lose in five sets [10-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-21, 15-7].
 
In the two sets the Lady Reds won they dominated, hitting .239 and a season best .409, however struggled in the three lost sets, hitting just .000, .093 and .059.
 
With another match-high 21 digs and 72 total digs on the weekend, Luci Krenzke moved into third place on the career digs list for Carthage College with 1,745.  Next on the list is Hanna Calhoon, who currently sits in second, with 1,848 career digs.
 
Megan Behrendt and Shannon Kebisek tallied double-figures in kills with 16 and 12 respectively and Ellie LeCount added 24 assists to lead the Lady Reds followed by Abigail McGowan with 19.
 
Carthage will be back in action next Saturday as the Lady Reds will play a doubleheader in Chicago at the University of Chicago at noon and against Dominican University at 2:30 p.m.
