GM1: Elmhurst 7, Carthage 6
Carthage saw a late inning lead dwindle after the Red Men built a 4-1 lead after six innings, as the Red Men scored runs individual runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Â
Starting pitcher
Chris DeRue had a solid outing and was lifted after 6.0 inning, which he allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out and walking four.
Â
However the Red Men bullpen was not able to close the door on the Bluejays, as back-to-back three run innings in the seventh and eighth to give Elmhurst a 7-5 lead going into the ninth.  Â
Â
Cleanup hitter
Reed Hero drove in in
Jared Knoespel on with his third hit of the game but Kiko Mari was able to pickup the save in the 7-6 Red Men defeat.
Â
GM2: Carthage 13, Elmhurst 3
Game two saw the Red Men battle back from an early 2-0 hole behind a strong pitching performance from
Tim Sulik to earn a lopsided 13-3 win. Sulik improved to 4-2 on the year with his fourth win in his last five starts despite allowing a season high 12 hits to the Bluejays. Sulik's day ended allowing three earned and striking out four and forcing Elmhurst to stranding nine batters while he was in.
Â
Carthage followed-up a ten-hit performance in the game-one loss with a 13-hit showing in the win, led by
Jordan Wiegold and
Drew Korosic. Wiegold finished 3-4 with a game-high five RBI's. It is the shortstop's second five-RBI performance in the Red Men's last three games.
Â
After falling behind 2-0 in the second, Carthage responded with three in the third as an Elmhurst error led to two unearned Red Men runs.
Â
Following a run by the Bluejays to once again tie it in the third at 3-3, Carthage scored runs in every inning the rest of the way to run away with it, capped-off by a solo homerun by
Jordan Wiegold in the eighth and a grand slam in the top of the ninth.
Â
Carthage will return to action at Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday with the second leg of a back-to-back doubleheader as the Red Men face Wheaton College at noon.
