TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College Red Men split double header action on Wednesday against Luther College, falling in game one, 5-1, before the best offensive and pitching performances of the season in an 18-1 game two win.Â

The split moves the Red Men to 4-6 on the season and snaps a three-game losing streak, while the Norse move to 7-4 in 2017.

GM1: Luther 5, Carthage 1
In game one,
Reed Hero opened the scoring with an RBI single to center field that drive in
Drew Korosic. Unfortunately for the Red Men, it would be their only run as Norse starting pitcher, Colin Coffee settled in and was dominant the rest of the way, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out ten Red Men in the seven inning complete game win.

Carthage starter
Chris DeRue went five innings and allowing just two runs in the tough loss. Despite allowing nine hits, DeRue was able to make the Norse strand nine runners in his five innings, including the bases loaded in his final inning of work.

The Norse broke through in the fourth with a pair of runs off DeRue and added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to doom the Red Men.

GM2: Carthage 18, Luther 1
In game two, the bats came alive and gave
Kevin Tibor more than enough run support, as the junior moved to 3-0 on the season. Tibor worked six innings allowing just one run and struck out a career-high eight batters in the win.

After a five run second inning for the Red Men, Carthage exploded for nine runs in the third to put it out of reach of the Norse early, with Carthage leading 14-0 midway through the third.

Six Red Men had a multi-hit games in the win that saw Carthage tally 18 total hits including three by
Ryan Kramer and
Nick Pierce each.Â
Drew Korosic,
Jared Knoespel,
Jordan Wiegold and
Graham Wick each recorded a pair of hits.

Pierce also drove in a game-high five runners in the win followed by Hero with three and
Vince Schwartz with two.

Carthage returns to action in Tucson on Thursday with a single game against Hamline University beginning at noon out west.
