Men's Volleyball Downs Mount St. Joseph Saturday, 3-0

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's volleyball team overcame serving issues in a three-set sweep on Saturday to defeat Mount St. Joseph University, 3-0, at Tarble Arena to cap-off the weekend.

The AVCA's number-seven team in the country, the Red Men, improves to 16-1 on the season and 14-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League.  MSJ falls to 15-6 on the year and 9-5 in the MCVL.

Despite great hitting performances in each set, .481, .429 and .448 in sets one through three respectively, the Red Men were hampered by service errors as they tallied 15 for the match.

"Offensively, I think we did a nice job," said head coach L.J. Marx following the win.  "Last night we started off very well offensively and just tailed off over the course of the match and lost some of our efficiency.  Something we talked about today was going in and being more efficient, which I think we did a very good job of that.  We missed a season's worth of serves in a three-set match today and that is something we are going to need to work on correcting going forward."

All six offensive threats for the Red Men hit over .300 for the match led by Zach Lillig at .600.  Fellow middle, Max Bongrats was behind Lillig at .563, setter Matt Reinsel hit .500, Marc Hansen hit .474, Braeden Waumans hit .444 and Griffin Shields hit .333.

Shields led the Red Men with 12 kills in the match followed by Hansen and Waumans with ten apiece.

Libero Cody Bolan led the Red Men with a match-high ten digs and Lillig turned in four blocks.

While turning in just three digs in the match a pair coming late in the third set nearly sealed the match for the Red Men, as a Shields kill off Bongratz's digs forced a MSJ timeout with the Red Men up, 22-18, before taking the match.

Matt Reinsel led all players with 39 assists in the match.

The Red Men return to action for a mid-week rematch with MCVL West Division rival MSOE on Wednesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in Milwaukee.  Carthage handed the Raiders their lone MCVL loss of the season in their first meeting of 2017 in a five-set thriller at Tarble on March 1st.
