TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College baseball team split a pair of games again on Monday as the Red Men dominated Oberlin College to open the day, 14-4, before falling to Kalamazoo, 12-9.
Â
The split keeps the Red Men at .500 as they move to 3-3 on the season. Oberlin fell to 4-1 on the year, while Kalamazoo improved to 5-1 with their win.
Â
GM1: Carthage 14, Oberlin 4
The Red Men scored 14 runs on just 11 hits against Oberlin in their win to open the day, which was more than enough for
Tim Sulik in Carthage's rout of the Yeomen.
Â
Following three and a half scoreless innings, the Red Men broke through with a five run fourth that started with
Alex Letto's bases loaded double to score
Zach Wade and
Reed Hero. The next Red Men batter,
Ryan Kramer, then followed suit with a two-RBI single to left to score Letto and Ryan Rogers. The Red Men then reloaded the bases and scored their fifth run of the inning when Stephen Kellner balked facing his first batter of the game in relief.
Â
The Yeomen cut the lead to two in the fifth off Sulik but it would be as close as they could get as the Red Men added three-run sixth and seventh innings to go up 11-4 after six. Drew Korosc delivered a two-out fifth inning two-run triple and
Alex Letto blasted a sixth inning two-out homerun to put the game away.
Â
Letto finished going 3-4 at the plate with five runs batted in, four runs scored, three extra base hits and a pair of walks.
Â
Tim Sulik earned his first win of the year (1-1) as he went six innings, allowing just three runs, while striking out five.
Â
GM2: Kalamazoo 12, Carthage 9
The Red Men found themselves battling from behind early as Kalamazoo jumped on Red Men starter
Joe Nelson for six runs through the first two innings following a three-run homerun in the first and three unearned runs in the second after a two-out error ignited Hornets.
Â
Following a pair of runs in the bottom of the first for the Red Men, Carthage cut the deficit to one at 6-5 on an RBI triple by
Jared Knoespel and a two-run homerun by
Reed Hero.
Â
Kalamazoo extended the lead back to four at 9-5 with a three run fifth that knocked starter
Joe Nelson out at 4.2 innings pitched with only five of the nine runs being earned. Nelson also struck out five in the loss.
Â
The Red Men didn't go away quietly however, as they cut the Hornets' lead to two twice in the late innings. In the seventh, RBIs by
Ryan Kramer and
A.J. Kaprelian cut the lead to 9-7, and in the eighth with a error on a Hero single that scored the Knoespel and a
John Burkiewicz RBI single.
Â
The Hornets escaped with a 12-9 win despite the Red Men threatening with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
The Red Men will somewhat of a break on Sunday, as for the first time since arriving Carthage will only be playing a single game against Allegheny College at 10:00 a.m.
