DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.—The back-end of the Daytona Beach Shootout pitted the Carthage College women's basketball team against Simpson College on Thursday afternoon at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lady Reds had the upper hand with a .397 field goal percentage (25-63) and a .400 three-point field goal percentage (6-15), but couldn't muster an advantage in the most important category as they fell to the Storm 64-60.
Autumn Kalis, who gave Carthage their first lead of the contest off a three-pointer at the 7:58 mark of the fourth quarter to make the score 51-48, finished with a game-high 21 points off an 8-for-10 mark from the field. She also hit five of Carthage's six three-pointers in the contest.
Rachel Szydlowski turned in a 16-point effort along with six rebounds and two steals.
The loss sends Carthage to 7-4, 1-2 CCIW while the Storm up their overall record to 7-4, 1-2 IIAC.
Lady Reds 64, Simpson College 60
Carthage found themselves in a 13-6 hole after the first quarter before they had the upper-hand in the second frame. It was the 3:17 mark of the second quarter where Carthage found their spark plug, when Simpson tallied their largest lead of the game at 25-17.
Sammie Woodward ignited Carthage with 2:39 left in the second when she came up with a steal, which helped set up back-to-back Kalis three-pointers to narrow their deficit to 25-23 with 1:53 left.
Monica Masini knotted the game 25-25 with 1:01 left in the second off a jumper.
Simpson regained the lead off Janey Botkin's three-pointer and took a 28-27 score into halftime.
It was a lead they hung onto until the 7:58 mark of the fourth quarter, when Kalis's fifth three-pointer of the game gave Carthage a 51-48 advantage. The Lady Reds tallied their largest lead of the game at 60-56 with 1:58 left in the fourth, but came up empty the remainder of the game with four missed shots.
The Storm capitalized on that with an 8-0 run to close the game to secure a 64-60 victory. The dagger occurred with 0:50 left when Janey Botkin's three-pointer gave Simpson the lead for good at 61-60.
The Lady Reds will return to action on Saturday, December 30 at Ripon College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
