Lady Reds Conclude 2017 Season With 2-1 Victory Over Vikings

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's soccer team hosted Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday evening with an opportunity to play spoiler. The Vikings, who needed a victory to stay in CCIW playoff contention, was ousted by Carthage 2-1 thanks to Kelsey Dejno's goal with 0:11 remaining in the contest. The Lady Reds held advantages in shots (15-12), shots on goal (9-7) and corner kicks.

"I was really proud as a coach in how we finished the season, continuing to play great soccer, moving the ball well and finding our feet," said head women's soccer coach Sara Meyer following season-ending victory. "It was excellent as a team to give our seniors a win on senior night and for their last game."

The contest marked the end of an era for graduating seniors Danielle Noverini, Darcy Stoecklin, Kate Perry and Talia Jaramillo. Team manager Michelle Blecha was also honored with the four seniors prior to Saturday's bout with Augustana.

"This group of seniors was just one that did an excellent job of leading, coming in and setting just a great tone," said Meyer. "They will be missed next year and am proud of what they have done and what they'll continue to do in their future."

The Lady Reds conclude their 2017 season with a 10-7-1, 3-4-1 CCIW record while the Vikings' end their campaign with an 8-8-1, 3-3-1 CCIW record.

Carthage dominated the Vikings with an 8-3 shots advantage in the first half, but it didn't result in offense as both team went to intermission deadlocked 0-0. That changed in the 62nd minute when Courtney Lee booted a ball from 30 yards out to the right of Vikings goalkeeper Syndey Ion, to a scrum in front of the net. The ball sailed off Kelsey Dejno to Joanne Stanfa's leg, where she finished with a goal to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.

Karleen Gomez made it 1-1 in the 66th minute when she took a rebound off her initial shot that hit the post. She registered a one-timer that was too much for Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek.

The Lady Reds claimed the 2-1 victory when Maggie Washelesky sailed the ball from 40 yards out to five yards in front of the net. Stanfa found Dejno, who buried her seventh goal of the season with 0:11 remaining to make the score 2-1.

Furmanek made six saves for the Lady Reds while Ion turned away seven shots for Augustana.
