DECATUR, Ill. – The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday night, as an 89
th minute goal lifted the Big Blue of Millikin University over the Red Men, 2-1.
"This one hurt," said head coach
Steve Domin after the loss. "Give some credit to Millikin, as their want to stay in the game was the difference… We have a great team but have to play near flawless to earn a result right now. We got what we wanted, a great first half, scored first, and the edge headed into intermission…
Alberto Eloyza and
Ivan Esquivel were on today, and
Kevin Penarrieta did a good job connecting with midfielders. Would have been a nice story to see one of them win this."
The loss drops the Red Men to 7-6-3 on the season and 1-2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while Millikin improves to 4-8-1 and 1-3-0 in the conference.
The Red Men opened the scoring in the ninth minute as a give-and-go by
Jerry Patino through
Kevin Penarrieta set Patino up inside the box to give the Red Men an early lead, 1-0.
Carthage controlled much of the pace of play through out match as Millikin looked to counter the Red Men attack, and that's just what they did in the 62
nd minute to even the score on a Dalton Gilbert goal.
Carthage had a number of free kick opportunities in the second half but were unable to answer as the match progressed.
On the Red Men's inability to get a second goal Domin stated, "We needed to put one more away to put our foot on their back. Didn't happen. I have to find a better combination to get the result. This is on me. No game in our league is a gimmie, and that's what we saw today."
Then in the 89
th minute, a long throw in by the Big Blue found Connor Foley at the top of the six, which he headed in with just under two minutes left in regulation for the 2-1 win.
Carthage will look to get even in the conference win column on Wednesday, when the Red Men return to Art Keller Field for a CCIW showdown with Elmhurst College at 7:30 p.m.
Domin said on heading into the second half of the CCIW season, "The initiative has changed now. We are playing to make something special happen later in the year. I believe we have the horses to do that. The question is, will our will win out?"
