KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's basketball hosted team Augustana College (Ill.) at Tarble Arena on Saturday evening.
Rachel Szydlowski, who started her third game of the season against the Vikings, registered a double double 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Reds past Augustana 73-62. She also paced Carthage with four blocks in the game.
Â
It was Szydlowski's second 20-plus point game of her career, and third double double of the season.
Bailey Gilbert registered 13 points while
Maggie Berigan added a career-high 10 to round out the Lady Reds in double-figures. Carthage held a 53-34 advantage in rebounds.
Â
"The impressive number was the 53-34 on the boards, that makes me feel really good," said head women's basketball coach
Tim Bernero. "You can't out rebound someone like that unless you stop them, you don't get credit for rebounding the ones they make."
Â
The Lady Reds improve to 10-8, 5-5 CCIW while Augustana falls to 13-6, 6-4 CCIW. Carthage now sits alone in fifth place and one game back from the playoff picture.
Lady Reds 73, Augustana 62
Â
Augustana's largest cushion of the game was 4-0 at the 8:00 mark of the first quarter. Jenn Vanwatermeulen gave Augustana their second lead of the contest with 5:57 left in the first quarter when she nailed a three-pointer to make the score 7-5.
Â
Carthage regained the lead, and stretched it to nine points when Szydlowski opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups to make the score 21-12 at the 8:44 mark. An Augustana 10-2 run narrowed their deficit to 23-22 with 6:51 left in the second quarter, which provoked Bernero to burn a timeout.
Â
The breather worked wonders for Carthage as they reached their first double-digit lead of the game off a Berigan layup to make the score 32-22 with 3:20 left in the second quarter. The Lady Reds eventually took a 34-26 lead into halftime. The opening half saw Carthage nearly double Augustana in rebounds with a 28-15 advantage. Â Â
Â
Both teams traded leads twice in the third quarter before Carthage regained the lead for good off Gilbert's layup at the 1:19 mark to make the score 49-47. The Lady Reds took a 51-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
Â
The Lady Reds outscored Augustana 22-15 in the final frame to regain a double-digit cushion, and secure a 73-62 victory.

Carthage will return to Tarble Arena on Wednesday, February 1 against Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m.
