Titans Too Much for Lady Reds

BLOOMINGTON, ILL.—The Carthage College women's basketball team opened a three-game road stand at Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday evening. The Lady Reds were in pursuit of snapping the Titan's four-game win streak that dates back to an 83-78 win over Wilmington College on December 30.

Carthage had fresh legs in their favor as they returned from a seven-day hiatus after dropping a 59-56 heartbreaker to Elmhurst College on January 7.  The fresh legs didn't result in a Lady Red lead the entire contest as Illinois Wesleyan cruised to a 77-50 victory.

The Lady Reds fall to 8-6, 3-3 CCIW while the Titans improve to 10-5, 5-1 CCIW.

The Lady Reds only mustered a 3-of-13 figure from the field in the first quarter en route to being in a 17-7 hole. The Titans stretched their lead to 25-7 at the 8:11 mark of the second quarter before Carthage notched their first field goals of the frame.

Madie Kaelber and Bailey Gilbert each tallied a three-pointer to narrow the Lady Red's deficit to 25-13 with 7:14 left in the second quarter, but couldn't close the door further. Rachel Szydlowski closed the frame with six of her 13 points in the game, but it wasn't enough as Carthage found themselves in a 41-22 hole at halftime.

The Titans gained a 20-point cushion for good at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter to make the score 53-33. Illinois Wesleyan closed the frame with a 7-6 run, which ended with a Maggie Berigan jumper at the buzzer to narrow Illinois Wesleyan's lead to 60-37.

The Titans outscored Carthage 17-13 in the fourth quarter en route to a 77-50 victory. Kaelber paced Carthage with 16 points and five assists. Szydlowski chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Reds will return to action on Wednesday, January 18 at North Central College (Ill.) Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
