KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday, falling in their home opener, 2-1, in overtime against Lake Forest College.
Â
The loss drops the Red Men to 3-1 on the season, while the Foresters get their first win to improve to 1-2 on the year.
Â
"Today felt like a trap game and that's what we got," said head coach
Steve Domin. "It's interesting because we played 6 pretty solid halves of soccer to this point and I didn't think we were going to have a poor one anytime soon… As a possession-oriented team, the weather really hurt us in the first period and we struggled to mount any quality looks at goal. Starting slow really hurt us and Lake Forest wanted it more. We may have won the stat sheet in most categories, but you wouldn't have know it by watching. Messy day all round."
Â
Despite outshooting the Foresters 12-6, Lake Forest managed to put five of their shots on goal and two past the Carthage keepers.
Â
The Red Men fell behind early for their third consecutive game as Lake Forest scored off a set piece in the 21st minute that was crossed in the box and tapped in the from the six.
Â
So it would stay until the 65th minute when freshman
Jorge Triana ripped a shot off a cross from
Johnny Rimkus that found the inside of the post and took a lucky bounce off the diving keeper to find the net.
Â
"A couple missed played balls in the back over shadowed a strong game by
Giles Phillips,
Kevin Mahoney and
Freddy Martinez," said Domin. "Although we are really young I like our team. We have so many options and it's getting tough to share the minutes, which is a good problem to have."
Â
Carthage kept the pressure up looking for the go-ahead which nearly came from
Freddy Martinez moments later but the pressure of the Lake Forest keeper kept the game level.
Â
Lake Forest managed to send the game into overtime where they took advantage of a costly Red Men turnover just 18 seconds into the first sudden victory period as John Cappuccitti curled the winner past a diving
Evan Bott for the game winner.
Â
"This one hurts but we will dust it off and get back at it."
Â
The Red Men hit the road for the 2016 Midwest Classic in Crawfordsville, Indiana where Carthage will face Hanover College September 10th and Wabash College September 11th.
