KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men had their four-game win streak snapped Tuesday at Art Keller Field, falling in a nationally ranked matchup to the Maroons of the University of Chicago, 6-2.
The loss drops the #19 Red Men to 7-3 on the season, while third-ranked Maroons stay unbeaten at 10-0.
"We haven't seen much of that in terms of a score around here in a long time, and credit to Chicago as they made us pay for 4 or 5 crucial mistakes," said head coach
Steve Domin. ""Interestingly enough for as poorly as we connected we still made a lot of things happen and it was a eventful game for about 70 minutes."
Giles Phillips opend the games scoring in the sixth minute as he was on the receiving end of an
Austin Bitta corner kick, which Phillips headed past inside the back post to go up 1-0.
The Red Men held the lead until the 15th minute when Max Lopez scored his first goal of the match, finishing off a tap-in from six yards out to beat Arce Justiniano.
Just over ten minutes later is was Lopez again, as the Carthage defense failed to close on him at the top of the box and he blasted a low shot inside the near post to go up 2-1.
The Maroons' lead was short-lived however as
Johnny Rimkus headed in a cross from Bitta in the 29th minute to tied the game, which stood going into the half.
The Red Men came out gunning in the second half nearly scoring two quick goals in the first few minutes of the half, however the Carthage chances fell to the side and the match remained tied at two.
"In game like this we have to put away all our opportunities and we didn't," noted Domin.
The game remained be neck-to-neck until the 68th minute when Dayo Adeosun broke the tie to put the Maroons up 3-2.
From there it would get away from the Red Men as Chicago added three more goals over a 13-minute span to put away Carthage by a final of 6-2.
Carthage will look to regroup now with the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener ahead of them. The Red Men hit the road Saturday, October 1st for an afternoon matchup at North Central College. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
