Red Men End Their Season With Loss At Denison

GRANVILLE, OHIO.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team competed in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse First Round Game at No. 6 Denison University on Wednesday afternoon. The contest marks the second-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Red Men.

The Buckeye state was Carthage's destination in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. Ohio Wesleyan University defeated Carthage 14-6 in last season's NCAA First Round Game. Fast-forward to 2016 and the Red Men are looking to reverse their fortunes in the state of Ohio and lock their first NCAA Tournament victory.

Things didn't work out that way as the Red Men fell to Denison University 19-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

Carthage ends the 2016 season with a 10-10, 4-1 CCIW record while Denison improves to 17-1, 8-0 HCAC.

The Red Men found themselves in a 5-0 hole after the first quarter. It didn't take long for Carthage to respond in the second quarter. Andy Szun forced a turnover, and recovered a ground ball at the 12:46 mark of the second frame. Szun swung a pass to Tanner Thomas, who finished the play with a goal. Thomas's 16th goal of the season narrowed Denison's lead to 5-1 with 12:43 left in the second quarter.

Denison pushed their lead to 8-1 at the 7:38 mark of the second quarter before Carthage generated another answer.

Szun generated that answer for Carthage when he tallied his 36th goal of the season with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 8-2.

The Red Men couldn't generate any more answers as Denison cruised with seven goals in the third frame. It was enough cushion to secure them a 19-2 victory over Carthage.

Carthage committed only one penalty in the game, a 0:30 pushing call on Jordan Calhoun at the 11:00 mark of the fourth quarter. Szun led the Red Men with four shots in the game.

Ryan Smith tallied nine saves in net for Carthage.
