KENOSHA, WIS.—A pair of cancellations this week forced the Carthage College softball team into an 11-day hiatus since their 6-10 and 9-0 losses at UW-Whitewater on March 29. The Lady Reds welcomed Augustana College to the Carthage Softball Field on Saturday afternoon to open CCIW play.
Â
Saturday's doubleheader with the Vikings was in limbo as a result of Friday night's snowfall, but the Carthage staff did everything they could to make things happen. Things happened on Saturday afternoon, but not in the Lady Red's favor as they fell to Augustana College by scores of 3-2 (11 innings) and 15-11.
Â
The temperature at the start of game one was 35 degrees.
Â
Carthage College falls to 6-8, 0-2 CCIW while Augustana improves to 13-15, 4-2 CCIW.
Â
Carthage 2, Augustana 3 (11 innings)
Â
Both starting pitchers went the distance for their respective team.
Katie Herron notched 12 strikeouts in 11 innings of work while Ashley Anderson notched three for the Vikings.
Â
Herron was the first of the two to receive run support. The Lady Reds took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi and
Shannon Walsh garnered back-to-back walks. This set up
Hailey Rothstein's RBI-infield single that scored Uhwat.
Â
It took the Vikings until the sixth inning to match the Lady Reds when Alaina Hofman doubled home Zayne Blumberg to make the score 1-1.
Â
The score remained 1-1 through regulation, forcing the game into extra innings. Brittany Kellett's 11-inning single put a runner on base for Anderson, who homered to push the Viking lead to 3-1.
Â
The Lady Reds threatened in the bottom half of the 11
th when
Darian Pelsor doubled and came around to score on
Abby Thompson's single to make the score 3-2. Unfortunately, thats all the Lady Reds had in the tank.
Â
Makenzie Walker paced the Lady Red offense with three hits in the game.
Â
Carthage 11, Augustana 15
Â
The Vikings set the tone with a three-run second inning en route to a 3-0 lead. That was enough to fuel the Lady Red fire, and Rothstein made that clear.
Â
Vivian Juarez and Walsh each scored on Herdegen's single in the third inning to narrow the Lady Red deficit to 3-2. With Uhwat and Herdegen on base, Rothstein belted a three-run home run to left field to give the Lady Reds their first lead of the game at 5-3.
Â
Shelby Grandt and Anderson paced the Vikings with a double each to lead a Viking five-run third inning to give them an 8-5 lead.
Â
Sam McCloud answered for the Lady Reds with a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give them a 9-8 cushion. That was the final lead of the game for Carthage as the Vikings responded with a seven-run fifth inning en route to a 15-9 lead.
Â
The difficult seven-run fifth inning was too much for the Lady Reds to overcome in a 15-11 loss to Augustana College.
Â
Rothstein led the Lady Red offense with three hits and four RBI. Walker, Pelsor and
Amy Goldsmith all saw time on the pitching rubber for the Lady Reds.
Â
Carthage will return to action on Monday, April 11 at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
