Lady Reds Split Non-Conference Bout With Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, WIS.—A busy week lies ahead of the Carthage College softball team, which began with a Monday-afternoon doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The cold temperatures highlighted the Lady Red's 3-2 (11 innings) and 15-11 losses to Augustana College at the Carthage Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.

Although not to the extent of Saturday's games, cold temperatures was also the remedy of the Lady Red's doubleheader with the Warriors. Carthage exploded with four runs in the first inning of game one, which provided enough cushion for a 12-0 victory. Fortunes were reversed in game two as the Warriors jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, which helped them secure a 7-6 victory.

Following Monday's doubleheader, the Lady Reds sit at 7-9, 0-2 CCIW while the Warriors clock in a 12-6, 3-1 NACC record.

Sam McCloud and Kristine Herdegen strung together a pair of doubles to begin the game, which put runners on first and second base for Hailey Rothstein. Rothstein knocked in Herdegen and McCloud with a ground-ball single to right field to give the Lady Reds a 2-0 lead.

Darian Pelsor added another double, which sent Rothstein to third base. Makenzie Walker cleaned the bases with a two-run single to extend the Lady Red lead to 4-0.

Katie Herron got the nod in the pitching circle for the Lady Reds, and picked up where she left on Saturday. She opened the first inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep things 4-0.

After a scoreless second inning, Darian Pelsor provided ignition for the Lady Reds in the third inning with a three-run home run to widen their lead to 7-0.

Vivian Juarez, McCloud and Shannon Walsh occupied each base to begin the fourth inning, which set up sacrifice flies from Herdegen and Rothstein to push the Lady Red lead to 9-0. The Lady Reds added three more runs in the fifth inning off Lauren Jones' two-run home run, and Alessia Knowski's RBI-double that scored Sam Payton to make the score 12-0.

Herron notched the win in the pitching circle. She registered eight strikeouts and allowed two hits in four innings of work. Pelsor and Herdegen each tallied a pair of hits for the Lady Reds.

The Warriors returned the favor with five first-inning runs en route to a 5-0 lead. That fueled the Lady Red fire, and Rothstein made that clear with a lead-off home run in the second inning to narrow the margin to 5-1. Later in the inning, Juarez punched a single up the middle, which scored Uhwat and Pelsor to help the Lady Reds get within 5-3 of the Warriors.

The Lady Reds mustered another run in the fourth inning when Jones singled, and her pinch runner Amanda Grove scored on McCloud's single to make the score 5-4.

Mackenzie Francour pushed the Warrior lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth with a home run before the Lady Reds evened the score. Rothstein and Pelsor led off the fifth inning with back-to-back hits, which set up Abby Thompson's RBI-single that scored Aileen Szczepanski (Rothstein's pinch runner) to narrow the margin to 6-5.

Thompson later scored on a Juarez infield-single to tie the Warriors 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning. However, an Abby Akright home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead and eventual victory.

Pelsor went the distance on the pitching rubber and tallied six strikeouts for the Lady Reds. Rothstein tallied three hits for the Lady Reds, which includes a home run.

Carthage will return to action on Wednesday, April 13 at Wheaton College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
