KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's lacrosse team have won five of their last six games prior to their meeting with the University of Dubuque at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Reds are coming off a two-game road swing that includes an 18-7 loss against Augustana College on April 16, and a 9-7 win against Illinois Wesleyan on April 20.
Â
The Lady Red's game against the University of Dubuque also marks the beginning of a two-game home stand to end the regular season. Augustana College is the lone school ahead of Carthage in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings. The Lady Reds did what they needed to do to help their CCIW playoff-positioning in a 10-6 victory over the University of Dubuque.
Â
Carthage improves to 10-4, 4-1 CCIW while the Spartans fall to 10-5, 1-3 CCIW.
Â
Lady Reds 10, Spartans 6
Â
Maddie Griffin's opening-draw control set up the first Lady-Red goal of the game. Dubuque's Jessi Tapia's foul gave
Elizabeth Wittenborg a free position attempt, which she converted on to give the Lady Reds a 1-0 lead with 28:34 left in the first half.
Wittenborg pushed the Lady-Red lead to 2-0 on her 12
th goal of the season with 23:49 left in the first half before the Spartans cut that lead in half. Bridget Schimers did the honors with a goal to make the score 2-1 at the 20:14 mark of the opening half.Â
Â
This forced Carthage head women's lacrosse coach
Lauren Hein to call a timeout to regroup. This breather proved successful as
Maddie Griffin grabbed the ensuing draw control, which set up
Rachel Mussell's goal with 19:07 left in the first half to push the Lady-Red lead to 3-1.
Â
The Lady Reds and Spartans traded goals to close the first half to make the score 4-2. The lone Carthage goal in that span belonged to
Kara Vana, which was of the free-position variety with 4:08 left in the opening frame.
Â
Both teams traded punches three times en route to a 7-5 Carthage lead with 14:29 left in the second half. Vana, Griffin and Mussell each tallied the first three goals in the second half for the Lady Reds.
Â
Carthage pulled away after they capitalized on a pair of Spartan fouls. Vana let a shot from the left circle go past Spartan goalkeeper Kaley Weir to widen the Lady Red lead to 8-5 at the 13:48 mark of the second half.
Kendell Santin's free-position tally at the 6:19 mark of the second frame made the score 9-5.
Â
The four-goal lead, which happened to be the widest margin of the game, was enough cushion for the Lady Reds to secure them a 10-6 victory. Santin put the cherry on top with a goal in the game's final seconds to make things final at 10-6.
Â
Vana led all Lady Reds scorers with three goals and one assist in the game. No penalities were called in the contest. Carthage edged Dubuque in the shots department with a 34-23 advantage.
Â
Taylor Sopron tallied nine saves in net for the Lady Reds.
