KENOSHA, Wis. – A chilly afternoon was no match for a red hot Carthage College women's lacrosse team at Art Keller Field, as the Lady Reds played the role of an unfriendly host, thumping Carroll University 24-1 Wednesday.
Â
The win moves the Lady Reds to 8-3 on the season and even more importantly 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Pioneers drop to 3-8 and 0-2 in the CCIW.
Â
For the second game in a row Carthage flexed their muscle on their way to a dominant performance, outshooting the Pioneers 33-3 on goal, winning the turnover battle 20-11, allowing just 4-of-11 clearances by Carroll, picking up 19-of-27 ground balls and controlling 20-of-27 draws.
Â
The Lady Reds wasted no time demonstrating that Wednesday was going to belong to them as they opened with five goals in the first ten minutes on goals by
Kara Vana,
Kendell Santin,
Shannon Long and a pair by
Maddie Griffin. The Lady Reds wouldn't slow down from there as Carthage tacked on nine more goals before the half courtesy of another pair by Griffin, two by
Rachel Mussell and
Elizabeth Wittenborg, and one each from
Bryanna Barrera, Vana and
Marissa Vavra to give Carthage an insurmountable 14-0 lead at the half.
Â
Vavra would open the scoring for the Lady Reds in the second half as Carthage wouldn't let off the gas, going on a 10-0 run out of the break to go up 24-0 before the Pioneers closed out the scoring with their lone goal with 3:54 remaining in the match.
Â
A pair of second half goals by Vavra and Santin each, along with solo goals by
Kristen Hairston,
Greigh Hoeft, Barrera, Long, Vana and Wittenborg rounded out the scoring for the Lady Reds.
Â
Griffin led the Lady Reds, who had ten different players score, with four goals in the game, while Santin, Vana, Vavra and Wittenborg each joined with hat-tricks apiece. Vavra's hat-trick was the first of her career and Wittenborg's was the first of her 2016 season.
Â
Griffin also added a game-high three assists to cap-off her seven-point day and Barrera dominated in the center circle to give Carthage the lopsided advantage in draws.Â
Â
Taylor Sopron earned the win for the Lady Reds in the net making one save against the only shot she faced.
Â
Carthage will now hit the road for two games beginning Saturday with archrival Augustana College in Rock Island at 1:00 PM at Thorson-Lucken Field. Following their meeting with the Vikings, the Lady Reds will head to Illinois Wesleyan University for a midweek game, Wednesday, April 20th, with the Titans.
