#3 Carthage continues streak with 3-0 sweep Fontbonne, move to 4-0 in MCVL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Carthage College men's volleyball team (11-1, 4-0 Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League), ranked No. 3 in the February 9th AVCA Coaches Top 15 Poll, earned their eighth sweep in a row with a 3-0 win over the Griffins of Fontbonne University (6-3, 0-2 MCVL) on Saturday, February 13th.
 
Leading 12-10 in the first, the Red Men made a nine-point run with J.P. Tulacka Serving to extend their lead to 23-10. Carthage would hold onto the lead and win the first set 25-13.
 
The second set showed a more focused Fontbonne team as they would take a an early 7-3 lead over the Red Men. Shortly after, Carthage would tie the game at 9-9 and earn four additional points to take the lead 13-9. The Griffins were determined to not get beat early once again, and came back to tie the game at 15-15. Even though Fontbonne showed promise, Carthage still proved to be stronger and took the second set 25-19.
 
The third set showed the skill and tenacity of both teams as the lead changed multiple times in the set. With the game tied 21-21 the Red Men made a costly attack error that gave the Griffins the lead. Down but not out, Carthage would earn the final four points of the match thanks to two kills each by Will Craft and Griffin Shields. The 25-22 win earned Carthage the 3-0 sweep over Fontbonne and keeps the Red Men's perfect in-conference record intact at 4-0.
 
Collectively, the Red Men made 45 kills, five service aces, nine blocks, 43 assists, 40 digs, and hit .207. Griffin Shields led Carthage with a season-high 17 kills, followed by Will Craft with eight and Scotty Adamczyk with seven, respectively. J.P. Tulacka and Tony Allen each earned two service aces in the three set match. Zach Lillig led in blocks with 5, accompanied by Craft and Tulacka with three apiece. Matt Reinsel recorded 38 assists and Will Craft connected on 12 digs.
 
The Red Men return home at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 19th as they host the Duhawks of Loras College at Tarble Arena.
