Lady Reds To Compete in Music City Classic



FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAME

-The Carthage College women's basketball team (5-4, 2-1 CCIW) will participate in the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. on December 29-30. NAIA member Cumberland University will host the two-day event.  The Lady Reds will face Stevenson University on Thursday, December 19 at 4:00 p.m., and Allegheny College on Friday, December 30 at 12:00 p.m. 

-The Stevenson Mustangs (6-3, 3-1 MAC) will enter their contest with Carthage off an 18-day hiatus from competition after defeating Elizabethtown College 65-44 on December 11.

-Sara Tarbert's (Stevenson) team-leading 23.2 points per game ranks 11th among all NCAA Division III women's basketball players. Tarbert leads the country with nine double-doubles, and ranks fourth in NCAA Division III with 11.0 rebounds, and 89 field goals made for Stevenson.

-The Allegheny Gators (2-8, 0-4 NCAC) snapped a six-game losing skid in a 65-65 win over Alfred University on December 12. 

-Candaisy Crawford leads the Gators in scoring with 14.5 points per game. Amgela Martelli owns 20 blocks for Allegheny, which ranks 40th in the country.

THE COACHES

-Jackie Boswell is in her sixth season as Stevenson University head women's basketball coach. Prior to Stevenson, Boswell served 10 seasons as the head girls basketball coach at Seton Keough High School.

-The 2016-17 season is Kate Costanzo's ninth as Allegheny head women's basketball coach.

THE SERIES

-The Lady Reds will face Stevenson and Allegheny for the first time in program history. 

LAST TIME OUT

-The Lady Reds will enter the Music City Classic off a 19-day hiatus from competition. 

-Morgan Harris's triple-double 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds propelled Carthage past Carroll University 82-69 on December 7.

-Augustana College defeated Carthage 83-68 on December 10. It was the second time Augustana defeated the Lady Reds among the previous 24 contests between the schools. 

-Morgan Vukovich's double-double 20 points and career-high 13 rebounds against Augustana led Carthage. Bailey Gilbert tallied four blocks and dished six assists in the contest.

SETTING THE TONE

Carthage owns a 4-0 record this season when they score first. 

RECORD WATCH

Harris sits in first place on the Carthage College record book with an .808 (181-224) career free-throw percentage. 

CONFERENCE/NATIONAL RANKINGS

The Lady Reds rank sixth in NCAA Division III with a .780 free throw percentage, and 18th with 79 three-point field goals made.  Harris leads the CCIW with 5.4 assists per game, and ranks second with 49 assists (20th in NCAA Division III). Gilbert ranks third in the CCIW with 59 three-point field goal attempts.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING

Bethel University, Stevenson University and Allegheny College make up the trio of opponents on the 2016-17 slate the Lady Reds have never faced. The Lady Reds defeated Bethel University 70-61 on November 18. 

HANGING ON

The Lady Reds own a 5-0 mark this season when they hold a lead with 2:00 left in the game. 

TRIPLE-DOUBLING

Harris's triple-double (19 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds) against Carroll (Wis.) on December 7 is among the seven to occur in NCAA DIvision III this season.

NEW TO THE SQUAD

Joining the Lady Reds roster for the second half of the season is #12 Sammie Woodward, and #20 Ellie Haviland. Woodward hails from Franksville, Wis. while Haviland is from Antioch, Ill. 

CCIW IN THE TOP 25

Wheaton (Ill.) is ranked #25 on the WBCA Coaches' Poll for December 13, and #24 on the D3Hoops.com Poll for the Week of December 19

CAREER-HIGHS

Madie Kaelber (eight three-point field goal attempts, two blocks vs. Carroll), Harris (11 assists vs. Carroll), Vukovich (13 rebounds vs. Augustana), Maddie Berigan (three blocks vs. Carroll, seven rebounds vs. Augustana) tallied career-highs for the Lady Reds in their previous games. 

BALANCED ATTACK

Eight different Lady Reds have scored in double figures through nine games of the 2016-17 season.
