KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College Lady Reds won a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup Wednesday night at Tarble Arena, as the women's volleyball team downed North Park University, 3-0.
Â
The win for the Lady Reds is the second in two nights and improves Carthage to 4-2 in the CCIW and 17-11 overall, while North Park drops to 7-19 and 1-6 in the conference.
Â
Carthage took the opening set after falling behind 5-2 early but the deficit was quickly erased with a 6-0 run, led by Anna Kinell who finished with five kills in the set, for the Lady Reds to take an 8-5 lead, which they never looked back from, eventually building a huge lead at 24-13. Â After struggling for a few points Rachel Mickey slammed home the winner at 25-18. Â
Â
Carthage repeated with a second set win to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match following a 25-17 win. Â After being tied at 6-6 early, Carthage used another big run like they did in the first set, this time a 10-2 run, to build a 16-8 lead. Â Stephanie Korbakes led the Lady Reds with four kills in the set that saw Carthage out hit North Park .294 to .139 in the set.
Â
The Lady Reds didn't take their foot off the pedal in the third set taking the set 25-16, securing the 3-0 sweep of the Vikings.
Â
"It was a good team win," said Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "I thought as a group we played well. They're very scrappy, they touched a lot of balls and they're very fundamental. Once we got the ball under control, our blockers started really pressing their hands over and got some key blocks, which turned things around. All in all, just a good team win. We're just trying to chalk them up here in the CCIW to move up that to get into the tournament. It's great to get the back to back wins and now it's back to practice and get things going."
Â
As a team, the Lady Reds compiled 47 kills, six service aces, five blocks, 42 assists, 58 digs, and hit .283. Rachael Kisten led the team with 10 kills, accompanied by Stephanie Korbakes and Stefanie Romanowski with seven apiece. Ellie LeCount made three service aces and Romanowski blocked four times in the match. LeCount also led in assists with 19 while Luci Krenzke recorded 18 digs.
Â
With just two games remaining, Carthage will hit the road for a match at Carroll University on Friday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m., before returning home for the 2016 regular season finale and senior night on Tuesday, November 1st at Tarble Arena against Wheaton College.
