OSHKOSH, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds wrapped up their weekend at the Titan Tussle Saturday, October 1st with a split of the day's action, topping Alma College before falling to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the finale.
The split keeps the Lady Reds at .500 with an 8-8 record on the season, while the Lady Reds dropped Alma to 7-9, and saw #19 La Crosse move to 15-2.
In the first game of the day Carthage put together one of their better hitting matches in recent memory, attacking at a .243 percentage to sweep Alma [25-17, 25-20, 25-19].
The Lady Reds defense was dominant in the match with
Luci Krenzke turning in a match-high 15 digs in the three-setter, while Carthage recorded seven total blocks to Alma's three to own the net.
On the attack,
Abigail McGowan set the Lady Reds up with 30 assists with nine of them going to
Anna Kinell.
In the second match of the day, Carthage fell in a heartbreaking five-set match that saw Carthage take a 2-0 lead but drop the final three sets to La Crosse [27-25, 25-19, 21-25, 13-25, 9-15].
After hitting .243 and .206 in the first two sets, Carthage was unable to get the ball to the ground, hitting just .172, .129 and -.077 in the final three sets respectively.
McGowan and Krenzke once again had near repeat statistical performances with 36 assists and 16 digs but it was
Stephanie Korbakes with 12 kills to lead Carthage in the match.
On the other side of the net the Lady Reds saw a well balanced attack with three Eagles in double figures for kills.
Following the conclusion of the weekend's action Carthage's
Stefanie Romanowski was named to the 2016 Titan Tussle All-Tournament Team.
Carthage will return to Tarble Arena following a nine-day break when the Lady Reds will host College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Illinois Wesleyan University. The Titans, currently ranked 21st in the nation, will visit Kenosha for the match on October 11th at 7:00 p.m.
