Red Men Come From Behind To Earn 1-1 Draw Against Chicago

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's soccer squad (5-4-1) got a hard earned result Tuesday night at Art Keller Field against the University of Chicago (7-2-1), as the Red Men came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against the Maroons.

"We should be the labeled the cardiac kids," said head coach Steve Domin, "as we have been living on last minute successes to this point in the season.  The boys showed a ton of heart in a business like manner throughout."

Austin Bitta had the Red Men's lone goal, as he was on the receiving end of a perfectly placed free kick taken by Jake Bukiri to the top of the six-yard box where Bitta one-touched it past the Chicago goalkeeper in the 89th minute.

The goal was the third of the season for Bitta and Bukiri's second assist of the season.

Chicago scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute as Matthew Koh found Brenton-Neal Desai on a cross from the right corner to give the Maroons the 1-0 lead on Chicago's first shot of the night.

"Chicago is a resilient, technical and a fast team, and its clear why they are receiving votes as a top-25 team in America," said Domin on the play of Chicago. "I really felt Ivan Chavez and Shane Reilly carried us for many minutes, and our back line again showcased."

The backline of Jake Bukiri, Filip Dyminski, Giles Phillips and Jamie Tausend stood strong limiting the Maroon attack and giving the midfield the opportunity to control much of the pace of the game, earning a 15-6 advantage on shots and 8-4 advantage on target.

"It was a touch frustrating having so much run of the play today, and we couldn't punch one in during the first and majority of the second periods," noted Domin.  "I think we really only had one breakdown, leading to one shot on frame by our opponent in the entire first half, and they scored."

Carthage freshman Niko Mavrogiannis played well in his first career start for the Red Men, recording three saves against the Maroons.

Carthage now enters play against the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin when Red Men host North Central College during the homecoming weekend, Saturday, October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Art Keller Field.
