Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime at Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped an overtime heartbreaker in the season opener 3-2 at Colorado College Tuesday.  The loss opens the Red Men at 0-1-0 and gives Colorado College a 1-0-0 start to 2015.

On the afternoon, Colorado College outshot Carthage 15-9 including six-to-five on-target.

"Give a lot of credit to Colorado College as they simply put a lot of pressure on us when we tired," said head coach Steve Domin.  "Frankly we played well enough in stretches to win this one on the road in tough conditions, made a great comeback, but wasn't meant to be"

Colorado College opened the scoring when they took advantage of a misplayed back pass in the third minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

23 seconds later Shane Reilly turned in Carthage's first goal of the season off a long ball from Stefano Dolomas that got past the Colorado defense and goalkeeper leaving Reilly alone inside the six for the easy finish.

After the half, still tied at 1-1, the match was delayed two hours and six minutes for a storm that rolled off the Rockies.

Out of the break in the 66th minute Nick Vogel played a ball over the Colorado College backline to find Johnny Rimkus who was able to beat the goalkeeper with a one-touch chip from the top of the 18-yard box.

Colorado College managed to cleanup a bouncing ball in the box in the 86th minute to tie it at 2-2 and send the game into overtime where Colorado College's Jack McCormick ended it on a golden goal free kick from 19 yards out in the 92nd minute.

"I was particularly pleased with our backline until the storms came, and Jamie Tausend was a warrior.  This experience and trip will make us better as we head into our regional portion of our season," noted Steve Domin.  "We are a fun team to watch, and at times a frustrating team to watch, and would assume we will see a bit of the same playing the tough schedule we keep."

The loss concludes men's soccer's trip to Denver and Colorado Springs in preparation for the full 2015 schedule.  Carhage will return to the Chicago metropolitan area Wednesday in preparation for the Bob Baptista Invitational hosted by Wheaton College.  Carthage will face Washington University (Mo.) Friday at 2PM followed by Bethel University (Minn.) on Saturday at 2PM before returning to Kenosha.
