Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Phil Burwell, Director of Athletic Communications

Carthage Falls At UW-Superior, 2-1, Sunday

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men closed out the Upper Midwest Classic dropping Sunday's match at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 2-1.

The second straight loss on the road drops Carthage to 3-3-0 on the season while UW-Superior improves to 5-1-0 in 2015.

Carthage once again dominated the statistical categories but was unable to find the back of the net, outshooting Superior 25-14 in the match, including 12-4 in the first half, and owned a 9-2 advantage on corners.

"Almost a carbon copy of Friday's match," said head coach Steve Domin.  "I mean, it's always tough to win against good teams, but particularly on the road.  Today we owned much of the game in possession and shots, and certainly in the first half.  Superior may have had only one shot on goal with a blown pressure-cover play on defense."

The Yellowjackets stung first with a goal in the 10th minute to give Superior the early 1-0 lead.

Sahr Mahoney evened it up, 1-1, in the 24th minute as he finished a cross from Jake Bukiri midway through the first half.

"We kept our heads and answered right back too," said Domin.  "We felt good we were going to get this one despite being another day of missed sitters."

But 11 minutes into the second half Superior struck again with the eventual game winner, as Superior converted off a free kick in the 56th minute for a 2-1 lead.

"I like our team, and we will continue to chip away as we get some folks healthy and some more experience"

Carthage competed today facing a shortage of everyday starters as the Red Men were without Filip Dyminski, Seamus Kaminski, Kevin Mahoney and Ivan Chavez.

"To compete today the way we did I was very proud," stated Domin.  "We got very good officiating in this match as well.  And (Austin) Bitta really filled a void today in the middle at a time when we really needed it.  Despite the results we played some attractive soccer and really just need to frame the goal somewhat better."

Carthage returns to action at Friday at Art Keller Field when the Red Men open the 2015 Battle on the Border with a match against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7:00 p.m.
