Jared Helmich Extends His Hitting Streak to 25 Games

The Carthage College baseball team (19-6, 8-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won a Wednesday, April 15 non-conference game from the University of Chicago (8-13), 9-8, at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Carthage scored a run in the first inning on an RBI-grounder by Jared Helmich.  Chicago came up with five runs in the second inning off Carthage starting pitcher Kyle Cibrario (Jr., Libertyville, Ill.).  Matt Cmiel connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 5-3.

Carthage's Jared Helmich (Jr., Lake Villa, Ill./Fox Lake-Grant Community) extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a single to right-center field in the third inning.  Helmich's 25-game streak is tied with Justin Hallock for the second-best in Carthage history, trailing only Glen Braun (26 games in 1999).

The Maroons scored two in the fourth to make it a 7-3 game.  The Red Men came back with a three-run fifth inning to narrow the gap to 7-6.  Helmich had an RBI-double and Matt Rave and RBI-single in the inning.  Chicago scored in the sixth to go up by two runs, 8-6, and Carthage scored in the bottom half to make it an 8-7 game.  The Red Men re-gained the lead in the seventh with a pair runs.  Nick Schmidlkofer's RBI-grounder tied the game, and Cmiel's RBI-single put Carthage ahead to stay.

Dalton Sjong (Jr., Paddock Lake, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 2-1), the second-of-four Red Men hurdlers, picked up the win. Sjong worked the five, sixth and seventh innings and allowed just an unearned run on two hits.  Luke Mentkowski (Jr., Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) entered the game in the eighth with the bases loaded and got Edward Akers on a called third strike to end the inning.  Mentkowski allowed a couple of base runners in the ninth but finished the game for his third save.  Robert Fuentes (0-2), the second Maroon pitcher, took the loss.

Graham Wick (Jr., Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) led Carthage' 14-hit attack by going four-for-five, and Matt Cmiel (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central) went three-for-four with two runs scored and three RBI.

On Saturday, April 18, the Red Men open a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Millikin University (13-14, 4-8 CCIW) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader, also at Augie Schmidt Field.  The two teams conclude the series with a Noon single game on Sunday, April 19.
