Lady Reds Play Host to Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday

The Carthage College softball team (9-17, 2-6 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost both ends of a Tuesday, April 14 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent and No. 10 North Central College (20-1, 6-0 CCIW), 13-1 and 10-2, at the Shanower Family Softball Field in Naperville, Ill.  The Lady Reds are in a three-way tied for fifth place in the league.

North Central scored two runs in the first inning of the opener, two runs in the second, seven in the third and two more in the fourth.  Kiersten Tinkhoff led an 11-hit Cardinal attack with three hits in four trips, two runs scored and three RBI.  The Lady Reds scored their lone run in the fifth on an RBI-double by Amanda Grove.  Andrea Starr (11-1) was the winning pitcher and limited Carthage to one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out six in five innings.  Darian Pelsor (So., Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook, 2-2) took the loss and surrendered 11 runs on 10 hits and five walks over three innings.

In the nightcap, North Central led, 5-2, after six innings, but the Cardinals scored five times in the top of the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.  Kiersten Tinkhoff continued her assault on Carthage pitching by going two-for-four with a double and four RBI.  Andrea Starr also went two-for-four with a double, a home run and four RBI.  Starr (12-1) was the winning pitcher in relief of Sarah Esposito.  Starr worked the final five and two-thirds innings and allowed just an unearned run on seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts.  Makenzie Walker (So., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford, 3-7) took the loss and gave up all 10 runs, nine earned, on eight hits and walk.
