The Carthage College baseball team (16-6, 7-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opened a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (8-15, 3-8 CCIW) by splitting a Saturday, April 11 doubleheader at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage, which had lost three league games in a row, won the opener, 11-7, before losing the nightcap by an 8-1 margin. The Red Men and the Bluejays conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday, April 12 at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill.
In the opening game, Elmhurst took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Zach Tsiodras. The Bluejays proceeded to load the bases with one out, but Red Men pitcher
Josh Daniels got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat and the inning. Elmhurst took a 2-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly, but an RBI-single by
Luc DiMaso in the bottom half cut the lead to 2-1. Outfielder DiMaso returned the lineup after missing 14 games with a hamstring injury suffered in the March 20 Hamline game.
In the Elmhurst third, Greg Struck tripled and scored on a single by Nick Cusumano for a 3-1 lead. Carthage scored five times in the fourth to take 6-3 lead.
Graham Wick hit a two-run homer, and
Nick Schmidlkofer followed with a three-run double. Greg Struck hit a solo home run for Elmhurst in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game, and A.J. Compton's two-run blast in the sixth tied the game at 6-6.
Drew Bailey hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to put the Red Men back up, 8-6. Wick and
Matt Rave followed with RBI-singles to up Carthage's lead to 10-6.
Jared Helmich's solo home run in the eighth made it an 11-6 contest.
Josh Daniels (Sr., Elk Grove, Ill., 4-0) was the winning pitcher, despite giving up six earned run on eight hits, two walks and eight strikeouts over six innings.
Chris Pedrak (Fr., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove-South) worked the final three innings to earn his fourth save. Pedrak allowed just one run on three hits and no walks.

Matt Rave each had three hits, with Wick and
Nick Schmidlkofer driving in three runs each.
In the nightcap, the two teams traded runs in the first inning, with the Red Men scoring on an RBI-single by
Jared Helmich. The Bluejays scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Nick Cusumano's two-run triple was the big blow in the fourth. A two-run single by Brandon Kressner in the seventh upped the Elmhurst margin to 6-1. Zach Tsiodras hit a solo homer for the Bluejays in the seventh to make it 7-1 and a sacrifice fly in the eighth closed out the scoring at 8-1.
Jeff Guzzi (2-2) was the winning pitcher, and he limited the Red Men to one run on six hits and two walks over eight innings.
Tim Sulik (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI, 2-1) took the loss and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings.
Kyle Cibrario pitched the final four innings and was tagged with four runs on seven hits and a walk.
Graham Wick had two hits for Carthage.
