KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men lost in heartbreaking fashion for the second game in a row, falling to Elmhurst College in double overtime on Halloween night at Art Keller Field, 2-1.
Â
The loss wraps-up the regular season for the Red Men at 10-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference, which is good enough for the number-three seed in next week's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament.
Â
"They were certainly playing with a lot of energy in a must win game," said head coach
Steve Domin. "And I thought we managed that well for a good portion of the match"
Â
The Red Men opened the scoring in the first minute as
Ivan Chavez curled a free kick from 40 yards out to the back post where
Giles Phillips one-touched the ball into the back of the net just 14-seconds into the match.
Â
The score would stand until the 74th minute when Elmhurst would tie it at 1-1 when the Bluejays would collect a missed clearance opportunity and send a cross to the back post where a sliding Robert Castillo would net the equalizer.Â
Â
"We got long-balled to death today, and missed a clearance and missed an assignment, which lead to only three shots on frame by Elmhurst and they made it stand," said Domin.
Â
The Red Men outshot the Jays 20-14 in the match and 10-3 on target, while earning a 9-3 edge in corner kicks but were unable to net a winner.
Â
Carthage would have their best chance in overtime when
Nathaniel Michaelis would receive a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and hit a low hard shot that the Elmhurst goalkeeper made a diving save to his right.
Â
In the first minute of the second overtime period Elmhurst's Austin Larsen would hit a screamer from the top left edge of the box that beat a diving
Niko Mavrogiannis to give the Jays the win.
Â
Domin pointed out, "Without making excuses we have gotten bitten by the injury bug late here and sitting behind a few cards this week which has left us less than full strength"
Â
The win for Elmhurst gives the Jays the tiebreaker and will host the Red Men as the number-two seed in the CCIW Tournament Wednesday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Â
"We have a great body of work to this point and earned the right to make a run at this thing. I know we will be excited to play on Wednesday"
