Men's Volleyball Shut Out by Lewis University, 3-0, in Jan. 14 Season Opener

Red Men Host Triangular on Jan. 24

The Carthage College men's volleyball team (0-1, 0-0 Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League), ranked No. 5 in the 2015 American Volleyball Coaches Association pre-season NCAA Division III poll, lost to Lewis University (3-1), 3-0, in the Red Men's 2015 season opener on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers' winning set scores were 25-16, 25-16, and 25-14.
 
Carthage got off to a slow start in the first set, trailing Lewis 5-10. The Red Men pulled within four points, 10-14, of the Flyers with a kill by Scotty Adamczyk (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) but Lewis kept their attack strong and closed out the first 25-16. In the second set, the Flyers got off to a dominating lead over the Red Men and opened with a score 13-5. Carthage battled back and pulled within five points at 11-16 with a kill by Adamczyk followed by two attack errors from Lewis. The Flyers took the second set 25-16. The Red Men kept it close at the beginning of the third set with a score of 4-5 and a kill by Griffin Shields (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley). However, Lewis pulled ahead creating a six-point lead at 16-11 until finally closing out the set at 25-14.
 
Shields led the Red Men with nine kills and three digs and a .182 hitting percentage, while teammate Adamczyk had a .429 attack percentage with four kills. Tyler Saieg (So., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove-North) collected 14 assists and three blocks.
 
Carthage opens at home on Saturday, Jan. 24 by playing host to a triangular at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage takes on Trinity International University (Ill.) at 11 a.m., followed by Trinity International (Ill.) versus Hannibal-LaGrange University at 1 p.m. and Carthage playing Hannibal-LaGrange at 3 p.m.
