Men's Basketball Falls at Illinois Wesleyan, 73-61, on Jan. 10

Red Men Travel to Elmhurst on Wednesday

The Carthage College men's basketball team (5-8, 1-2 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent and No. 22 Illinois Wesleyan University (10-4, 2-1 CCIW), 73-61, on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
 
Carthage led for most of the first half.  The Red Men took a five-point lead, 18-13, at 10:24 and still led by five, 21-16, at 8:56 and by four, 24-20, at 5:52.  The Titans closed out the period on a 16-7 run to go up by five points at the break, 36-31.  Illinois Wesleyan extended its lead to nine points early in the second period, 47-38, at 14:22.  Carthage used a 9-3 run to close to a point, 50-49, at 10:00, but IWU came back with six unanswered points to go up by seven, 56-49, at 8:01.  The lead went to 11 points, 62-51, at 4:28 and to 12 points, 69-57, at 1:29.  The Titans went on to win by 12, 73-61.
 
Illinois Wesleyan shot 55 percent (27-39), including five-of-17 from three-point range, while Carthage shot 45 percent (23-51), including just three-of-16 three-pointers.  The Titans got to the free-throw line 17 times and made 14, while the Red Men connected on 12-of-17.  Illinois Wesleyan out-rebounded Carthage by a 31-22 margin.
 
The Titans' Dylan Overstreet led all scorers with 20 points on seven-of-10 field goals, along with five-of-six free throws, five rebounds and seven assists.  Mike Marietti came off the bench to score 19 points on nine-of-10 shooting and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Ryan Coyle chipped in 11 points and seven boards.  Cameron Van Wyk (Sr., Wassenaar, Netherlands) led the Red Men with 14 points on a perfect seven-of-seven field goals.  Mike Stevenson ((So., Burlington, Wis./Wilmot-Union) had 13 points, and Ellis Matthews (Jr., Libertyville, Ill.) chipped in 10 points.
  
Carthage travels to Elmhurst, Ill., on Wednesday, Jan. 14 to play conference-opponent and No. 22 Elmhurst College (12-2, 2-1 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. contest at R.A. Faganel Hall.
