Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (2-4-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost to St. Norbert College (4-0-0), 3-2, on Friday night, Sept. 12 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Green Knights were ranked seventh in the Sept. 9 National Soccer Coaches Association of America North Region poll.
St. Norbert took a 1-0 first-half lead when Tyler Kassube scored at 28:50, assisted by Marci Delbecchi. The Red Men tied the game, 1-1, at 34:30 on a goal by
Michael Dombrowski (Sr., Johnsburg, Ill.), assisted by
Austin Bitta. The Green Knights came right back, 10 seconds later, to take a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal by Calian Schrader at 34:40. St. Norbert made it a 3-1 game just as the first half ended on a free-kick goal by Sean Sladky at 44:30, assisted by Kassube.
Michael Dombrowski scored again at 58:52 second period, assisted by
Jamie Tausend, to cut the lead to 3-2. The Red Men out-shot the Green Knights, 21-8, but St. Norbert goalkeeper Scott Faul had eight saves. "The rain and a slick track was the great equalizer tonight," said Carthage coach
Steve Domin. Simply allowing three goals in the first half on miscommunication, poor marking and really two extremely unlucky plays was our demise. It seems like we have a couple of these games each year where we dominate the stat sheet but don't win the game.
The Red Men play host to the Eighth Annual "Battle on the Border" on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 19-21 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage plays Wartburg College on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. In between, Wartburg takes on St. Thomas (Minn.) in a Saturday, Sept. 20 game at 7 p.m.
