Men's Soccer Opens with a 1-0 Win over Olivet on Aug. 29

Red Men Play Host to Willamette on Labor Day

8/29/2014 10:42:00 PM

Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opened its 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 29 with a 1-0 win over Olivet College (0-1-0) at the Olivet Soccer Field in Olivet, Mich.

The Red Men tallied the game's lone goal at 33:02 first period when Johnny Rimkus (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) scored with a shot over Comets goalkeeper Ryan Grashik from 10 yards out.  The Rimkus goal had a double assist from Arnoldo Reyes and Seamus Kaminski.  "Johnny has been a little raw at our level, said Carthage coach Steve Domin, "but he makes up for it with determination."

Carthage owned much of the statistic sheet in the first half, but the Comets slowly started to turn the tide midway through the second period.  Both defenses in the second half were stingy.  Carthage goalkeeper Jovani Mata (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Westchester-St. Joseph) earned the shut-out.

"It was a tale of two halves," said Domin.  "After a  slow start, we were able to continue the high level of play we saw in the Rollins game earlier this week.  In the second half we started to tire a touch, probably due to all the traveling, training, and heat this past week."

The Red Men open at home at Monday, Sept. 1 by playing host to Willamette College in an 11:30 a.m. contest at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.  On Wednesday, Sept. 3, Carthage entertains Carleton College in a 7 p.m. game, also at Art Keller Field.
