The Carthage College men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opened its 2014-15 season on Saturday, Nov. 15 with an 85-73 win over North Central University (Minn.) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage led by nine points at halftime, 46-37, but the Red Men had just a three-point advantage, 39-36, over the Rams in the second half. North Central (Minn.) shot 49 percent (28-57), including seven-of-14 three-pointers, while Carthage shot 57 percent (29-51), including nine-of-16 from three-point range. The Rams were 10-of-15 from the free throw line and the Red Men 18-of-28. Carthage had a 33-23 rebounding advantage.
Three Carthage starters scored in double figures, with
Reese Herth scoring a game-high 19 points on six-of-10 field goals, including three-of-three three-pointers.
Mike Kjeldsen (So., Bloomingdale, Ill./Lombard-Glenbard East) had 14 points on five-of-eight shooting, including four-of-six from three-point range, along with six rebounds and six assists.
Cameron Van Wyk (Sr., Wassenaar, Netherlands) scored 12 points on five-of-eight field goals, and
Ellis Matthewsl (Jr., Libertyville, Ill.) came off the bench to add 11 points.
Donte Logan (Sr., Evanston, Ill./Skokie-Niles West) scored seven points and dished out seven assists. Jordan Harrell and Luke Chafin led the Rams with 16 points each.
On Friday-Saturday, Nov. 21-22, the Red Men play host to the Carthage Classic I, also at Tarble Arena. Aurora University (1-0) takes on Wisconsin-La Crosse (1-0) on Friday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m., followed by Carthage against the University of St. Francis (Ill., 3-1) at 8 p.m. The consolation and championship games are on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 and 6 p.m.
