The Carthage College men's soccer team (9-10-0, 2-5-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) ended its season on Saturday night, Nov. 1 with a 3-0 loss to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (11-4-3, 4-2-1 CCIW) at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst, Ill. The Red Men missed qualifying for this year's CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament following Millikin University's win over North Central College on Oct. 29.
The Bluejays took a 1-0 first-half lead on a penalty-kick goal by Michael Delong at 30:27. Josh Rudd scored at 46:05 second half, assisted by both Brad Yarwood and Jeff Kading. Six minutes later at 52:48, Elmhurst made it a 3-0 contest on a goal by Yarwood. Carthage had an 20-14 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
"We just couldn't recover from a penalty kick awarded late in the first half," said Carthage coach Steve Domin. "We needed to get on the board first in this match, something we have not been able to do the last handful of games this year. I know many will point to a rash of late-season injuries that plagued us, but we should be deep enough to pull through. We had several wins over nationally or regionally-ranked opponents this year, but did not take care of business on the other dates."
