Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (8-6-0, 2-1-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) upset CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-3-0, 2-1-0 CCIW), 2-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Thunder were ranked fifth in the October 14 National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll and first in the Central Region rankings, while the Red Men were ranked 10th regionally.
Carthage took an early, 1-0 lead when

Taylor Pignataro. Carthage made it 2-0 at 77:30 second period on a goal by

Jovani Mata (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Westchester-St. Joseph) collected nine saves.
"This was two great teams battling it out," said Carthage coach
Steve Domin. "We seem to have wars with Wheaton every year, and sometimes they find an extraordinary way of getting out from our pressure, but not today. We battled the wind in the first half and really out-possessed them and carried the first period completely. Frankly if we knock in a few sitters, we could have gotten this one by a handful. Give credit to Wheaton. They are have been one of our better tests all year. And without overlooking the two goals,
Shane Reilly and our back-line deserve a lot of credit. Playing at home with our fans really give us a lift, and tonight we needed them."
Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 18 to take on conference-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 8-4-1, 0-1-0 CCIW) in a 3:30 p.m. game at Thorsen-Lucken Field.
