The Carthage College men's soccer team (7-3-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 10th in the Sept. 24 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region poll, upended Robert Morris-Lake County (0-3-1), 8-0, on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage took a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by
Drew Liogas (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), assisted by both
Arnoldo Reyes and
Seamus Kaminski at 8:51 and
Mike Heika (Sr., Inverness, Ill./Palatine-Fremd) on a penalty kick at 38:59. The Red Men added six goals in the second period, thanks to
Michael Dombrowski (Jr., Johnsburg, Ill.), assisted by
Ryan Crane at 47:15;
Erhan Caglayan (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill.), assisted by both Michael and
Kevin Dombrowski at 50:15; Caglayan again at 53:08 assisted by Reyes;
Jeremy Velinski (Fr., Palatine, Ill.), assisted by Tristian Penick at 56:13; Velinski again at 72:49, assisted by
Cesar Garcia; and
Shane Reilly (So., Libertyville, Ill.), assisted by Shane Dolomas at 80:10. The Red Men had a 30-1 advantage in shots over the Eagles.
"Frankly, it's hard to feel all that bad about winning, 8-0," said Carthage coach
Steve Domin, "but it wasn't our best night by any means. We did a nice job of owning the ball for stretches, and especially playing several non-traditional line-ups and combinations. We really need to hit another level to be competitive with the top-20 teams in the country. We can get there, the question is can we do it on the right nights."
Carthage plays host to No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, Sept. 29 in a 7 p.m. contest, also at Art Keller Field. The Warhawks were ranked third in the Sept. 24 National Soccer Coaches Association of America North Region poll.
