Lady Reds Play Host to the Carthage Invitational This Weekend

The Carthage College women's volleyball team (5-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 20th in the Sept. 10 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, split a Wednesday, Sept. 11 triangular at Carroll University's Van Male Field House in Waukesha, Wis.

Carthage lost a re-match with No. 19 Wisconsin-Whitewater (7-3), 3-2, before outlasting Carroll (Wis., 5-5) by a 3-2 margin. Carthage knocked off then-No. 13 UW-Whitewater, 3-1, on Aug. 30 in Whitewater, Wis. The Warhawks' winning set scores over the Lady Reds on Wednesday were 15-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-10, and Carthage's winning scores over Carroll (Wis.) were 19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-11 and 17-15.

In the loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater, Angelica Walinski (Sr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) paced the Lady Reds with 14 kills, while Emily Heuermann (So. Washington, Ill.) had 12 kills. Setter Karen Chin (So., Mundelein, Ill.) averaged 8.75 assists per set. Staci Hasler led the Warhawks with 15 kills. In the win over Carroll, Heuermann led the way with 16 kills and a .278 attack percentage, while Walinski collected 13 kills. Chin averaged 8.0 assists per set against the Pioneers.

On Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14, the Lady Reds play host to the Carthage Invitational Tournament at both Tarble Arena and the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center Fieldhouse. On Friday, Sept. 13, Carthage takes on Dominican University (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. and No. 3 and defending-national-champion the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 6-1) at 7:30 p.m. In Friday's neutral-site matches, Dominican (Ill., 5-2) takes on No. 13 the University of Chicago (5-2) at 3 p.m., Wisconsin-Platteville (4-4) plays Illinois Wesleyan University (6-2) at 4:30 p.m., Chicago plays No. 40 Wisconsin-Eau Claire (4-5) at 6 p.m., and Illinois Wesleyan takes on Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Carthage plays Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Noon and Wisconsin-Platteville at 2 p.m. In Saturday's neutral-site contests, Wisconsin-Platteville plays Dominican (Ill.) at 10 a.m., Chicago meets St. Thomas (Minn.) at Noon, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire takes on Dominican (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
