Men's Soccer Knocks off Elmhurst, 4-2, on Oct. 23

Red Men a Perfect 9-0 at Home This Year

Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (12-4-1, 4-1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked seventh in the Oct. 22 National Soccer Coaches Association Central Region poll, knocked off CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (9-3-3, 2-1-2 CCIW), 4-2, on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Bluejays were ranked fifth in the NSCAA regional poll.

With the win, Carthage remains in second place in the league, just behind Wheaton College (Ill., 13-3-1, 4-0-1 CCIW). The Thunder remain on top of the standings following a 5-2 win over Augustana College (Ill.), also on Wednesday. Carthage has a perfect 9-0 home record this year. Going back to last season, the Red Men have won 13 in a row at Art Keller Field. The team's last home loss was a 3-2 decision to Wheaton College (Ill.) on Oct. 3, 2012.

The Red Men took command of the Elmhurst game with three first-half goals. Carthage took 1 -0 lead at 12:45 on a goal by Erhan Caglayan (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill.), assisted by Drew Liogas. The Red Men made it 2-0 at 35:57 when Billy Hamilton (Sr., Woodstock, Ill.) scored, assisted by Taylor Pignataro. The lead went to 3-0 just as the first half ended on a goal by Ryan Crane (Jr., Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) at 42:14, his sixth of the year and assisted by Michael Dombrowski. In the second half, Taylor Pignataro scored on a penalty kick at 59:18, and the lead went to 4-0.

The Bluejays scored two late goals for the final, 4-2 margin. Brad Yarwood scored on a free kick at 77:27, and Jeff Kading scored on a penalty-kick goal at 86:59 to close out the scoring. Carthage had 21-11 advantage over the Elmhurst in shots, including a 13-5 edge in shots-on-goal.

The Red Men travel to Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 26 to take on conference-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University (8-7-2, 2-3-0 CCIW) in a 5:30 p.m. game at the Neis Soccer Field.
