Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (11-4-1, 3-1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the Oct. 15 National Soccer Coaches Association Central Region poll, defeated CCIW-opponent North Park University (9-4-2, 2-1-1 CCIW), 2-1 in double-overtime, on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Vikings were ranked 19th nationally and second in the region.
With the win, Carthage remains in second place in the league, just behind Wheaton College (Ill., 10-3-1, 2-0-1 CCIW). The Thunder remain on top of the standings following a 2-1 win over Illinois Wesleyan University, also on Oct. 19.
North Park took an early, 1-0 lead when Mike Herbst scored at 9:36, assisted by Fredrik Greiff. That's the way it stayed until the final minute of regulation, as the Vikings packed things in, defensively, with anywhere from five-to-seven players back. Then, with 52 seconds to go, Carthage's
Michael Dombrowski (Jr., Johnsburg, Ill.) scored, assisted by
Shane Reilly, to tie the game, 1-1. Dombrowski struck again at 106:05 in the second overtime, scoring the game-winning goal and his 11th of the year, assisted by both
Ryan Crane and
Billy Hamilton, to seal the win.
The Red Men had a whopping, 24-10 margin in shots over the Vikings, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Carthage goalkeeper
Nick Huftalin (Jr., Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) collected six saves.
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (9-2-3, 2-0-2 CCIW) on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a 7 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
