Men's Soccer Thumps Northland, 10-0, on Sept. 7 at the "Battle on the Border"

Red Men Take on St. Norbert on Sunday

Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened play at its “Battle on the Border” tournament on Friday, Sept. 7 by thumping Northland College (0-3-0), 10-0, at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Carthage rolled up a 7-0 lead over Northland by halftime.  A goal by Michael Dombrowski (So., Johnsburg, Ill.) at 9:24 first period gave the Red Men a quick 1-0 lead.  Goals followed by Jordan Innis (Sr., Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake-South) at 12:09, Greg Pignataro (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) at 20:16, Christian Harvey (Jr., Woodstock, Ill.) at 36:25, Erhan Caglayan (So., Schaumburg, Ill.) at 39:00, Frank Delgado (Sr., Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) at 40:05 and Nenad Komljenovic (Fr., Naperville, Ill./North) at 40:56.  Carthage tacked on three more goals in the second half, the first by Kevin Hilgart (Jr., Geneva, Ill.) at 64:00, a second goal by Harvey at 74:17 and a second goal by Innis at 78:07.

Carthage set an Art Keller Field record with the 10 goals, breaking a mark of nine set against Rockford College on Oct. 21, 1997 and matched against Rockford on Oct. 17, 2003.  The Red Men fell short of a school-record 12 goals, also against the Regents, Sept. 22, 2004.  Carthage had 29 shots, including 14 on goal, while the Lumberjacks were unable to get a single shot off.

"To be 100 percent honest,” said Carthage coach Steve Domin, “I am not sure what happened out there today.  It might have been a whole bunch of factors.  We couldn't wait to get back on the field after our pre-season trip, we were playing at home for the first time with a new team, and we were a bit fortunate in playing a team in a rebuilding phase after several hours of travel.  Believe it or not, we really don't organize to score endless stretches of goals, but rather to keep possession, out-work, and break opponents with a more methodical approach to transition.  We used our depth and athleticism more than our ability to play a clean game.  We'll see if we can keep riding the momentum.”

The Red Men conclude tournament play by taking on St. Norbert College (3-0-1) on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.  In non-Carthage tournament games, St. Norbert (3-0-1) nipped Clarke University (2-1-0), 3-2, on Saturday, Sept. 8, with Clarke (3-1-0) shutting out Northland (0-4-0), 7-0, on Sunday, Sept. 9.
