University of Chicago "Gargoyle Classic" Next on Friday-Saturday

Box Score The Carthage College women's volleyball team (6-4, 1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 21st in the Sept. 18 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went toe-to-toe with pre-season CCIW-favorite and No. 12 Elmhurst College (7-3, 2-0 CCIW) on Tuesday, Sept. 18 but came up on the short end of 3-2 match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.  The Bluejays' winning set  scores over the Lady Reds were 25-14, 28-30, 25-15, 21-25 and 17-15.
 
After losing the first set, 25-14, Carthage took a 24-21 lead in the second set before Elmhurst tied things up at 24-24.  The two teams battled to a 28-28 tie before the Lady Reds ran off two-straight points for a 30-28 decision.  The Bluejays opened up a 17-10 lead in set three and cruised to a 10-point win, 25-15.  In the fourth set, Carthage opened up a seven-point lead at 17-10 and extended that to eight points, 21-13.  Still leading by six, 24-18, the Lady Reds saw the Bluejays run off thee-straight points to close to within three, 24-21, but Carthage got the final point for a 25-21 win.  The fifth-and-final set was a one or two-point contest all the way until Elmhurst snapped a 15-15 tie with the final two points.
 
Veasy Smith Neya and Megan Reynolds had 15 kills each for Elmhurst, while Sam Szarmach had 14 kills and Kaitlyn Wilks 10 kill and a .375 attack percentage.  Angelica Walinski (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led Carthage with a match-high 20 kills and hit .333, with Emily Heuermann (Fr., Washington, Ill.) adding nine kills.
 
On Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22, the Lady Reds play in the University of Chicago “Gargoyle Classic” at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago.  Carthage takes on No. 18 the University of Mount Union on Friday, Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. and the No. 11 and host-Maroons at 7:30 p.m.  On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Lady Reds face No. 22 Heidelberg University at Noon and Trinity Christian College at 2 p.m.
