Carthage Men's Soccer Blanked by Kalamazoo, 2-0, on Sept. 1

Red Men Play Host to the "Battle on the Border" on Friday-Sunday

9/1/2012 4:38:00 PM

Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) fell to Kalamazoo College (1-1-0), 2-0, on Saturday, Sept. 1 on the final day of the Wheaton College (Ill.) "Bob Baptista Invitational" at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.  Carthage opened its 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 31 with a 2-0 decision over Principia College (0-1-0).

In Saturday's loss to Kalamazoo, the Hornets scored both of their goals in the first period.  Roger Mason Darling scored on a header three minutes and 14 seconds into the contest, and Nicholas Shabino scored, also on a header, at the 22:15 mark.  Kalamazoo goalkeeper Beau Prey  collected seven saves en route to the shutout, while Red Men goalie Steve Kvasnicka (Sr., Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph) had two saves.

“When you play with fire,” said Carthage coach Steve Domin, “often you get burned.   That was the story today.  This can be a cruel game.  Dominating every stat and the run of the play doesn't always yield results.  We made a couple mistakes in the backfield which lead to only a handful of shots on frame for Kalamazoo, but they made two count.  We are still figuring out what works best for us, and chipping away.”

Carthage plays host to the sixth-annual “Battle on the Border” on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 7-9 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The Red Men take on Northland College on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. and St. Norbert College on Sunday, Sept. 9, also at 7 p.m.  In non-Carthage tournament games, Clarke University takes on St. Norbert on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m., with Clarke playing Northland on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
