No. 24 Women's Volleyball Goes 3-1 at the Oct. 5-6 Wartburg "Knights Classic"

Lady Reds Travel to North Central College on Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Carthage College women's volleyball team (15-9, 2-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 24th in the Oct. 2 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 3-1 at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 5-6 Wartburg College “Knights Classic” in Waverly, Iowa. 

Carthage opened tournament play on Friday, Oct. 5 with a 3-1 loss to No. 7 the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 20-1) at Wartburg's Levick Arena.  The Tommies' winning set scores over the Lady Reds were 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-22.  Carthage then defeated Gustavus Adolphus College (7-13), 3-1, in a second match on Friday at the at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Fitness Center with winning scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-23.
 
Paige Brimeyer led St. Thomas (Minn.) with 13 kills and a .344 attack percentage.  Kelly Foley had 11 kills and hit .360, while Jill Greenfield added 10 kills.  Angelica Walinski (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North), who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Lady Reds with 13 kills, despite hitting into 10 errors.  Bria Haliey (Fr., Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg) had 11 kills and hit .250, with setter Karin Chin (Fr., Mundelein, Ill.) averaging 11.50 assists per set. In the win over Gustavus Adolphus, Walinski collected a match-high 14 kills and hit .250, while Chin averaged 11.0 assist per set. 

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Lady Reds swept St. Olaf College (8-14), 3-0, at the Sports & Fitness Center, with winning scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-20.  The Lady Reds concluded tournament play by sweeping Bethel University (Minn., 14-8), 3-0, also at the Sports & Fitness Center.  Carthage's winning set scores over Bethel (Minn.) were 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17.  Walinksi had 12 kills in the St. Olaf contest, and Emily Heuermann (Fr., Washington, Ill.) added 10 kills.  In the win over Bethel, Heuermann collected 24 kills and hit .667 (24-2-33), while Walinski had 18 kills with a .324 average.  Chin averaged 14.33 assists per set against the Royals.
 
The Lady Reds travel to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, Oct. 9 to play CCIW-opponent North Central College (18-4, 4-0 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. match at Gregory Arena at Merner Fieldhouse.
