Carthage Men's Soccer Strikes Late to Edge Elmhurst, 1-0, on Oct. 24

Red Men Move into a Fourth-Place Tie; Play Host to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday

10/24/2012 9:45:00 PM

Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (13-5-0, 3-3-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) struck late to edge CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (8-10-0, 0-6-0 CCIW), 1-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst, Ill.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for 83 minutes before Carthage's Michael Dombrowski (So., Johnsburg, Ill.) scored at 83:01, his 10th goal of the year and assisted by Jordan Innis. Carthage out-shot Elmhurst, 15-6, including a 10-3 edge in the second period.

"Frankly,” said Carthage coach Steve Domin, “the first half was possibly the worst soccer I have witnessed out of our guys this year.  Our back line of Jake Bukiri, Will Veliz, Kevin Hilgart and Filip Dyminski gave us a chance to get things sorted out over time.  We are a deep team, and it's not too often when we can't at least rely on a few players to carry us through, but today turned out to be one of those days.  Give some credit to Elmhurst, as they battled, showed our league's depth and showed how badly they wanted the win.  I think we're getting closer to healthy.  Now we need to get dangerous again”

With the win, Carthage pulled into a fourth-place tie with North Central College, each with 3-3 league records.  With a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Oct. 13, the Red Men would have a tie-breaker and a tournament berth as long as the two teams stay even after Saturday's regular-season CCIW finales.  Carthage plays host to third-place Illinois Wesleyan University (11-4-0, 4-2-1 CCIW) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and North Central (Ill., 11-6-0, 3-3-0) plays host to second-place North Park University (10-2-4, 4-0-2 CCIW) at 6 p.m.

First-place Wheaton College (Ill., 14-3-2, 6-0-1 CCIW) clinched its 17th CCIW title and the top seed in the CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday with a 3-0 win at home over Millikin University (5-12-0, 1-6-0 CCIW).
