Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (11-4-0, 2-2-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked sixth in the Oct. 9 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Central Region poll, defeated CCIW-opponent North Central College (8-6-0, 1-3-0), 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Ill.
The win kept the Red Men in fourth place in the league, one point behind third-place Augustana College (Ill.) and one point ahead of fifth-place North Park University. Carthage plays at North Park on Saturday night, Oct. 20.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Stephen Korosis (Jr., Lindenhurst, Ill./Lake Villa-Lakes Community) at 28:19 first period. The Red Men made 2-0 at 53:18 second period when
Alexander Marquis (So., Caracas, Venezuela) scored, assisted by
Greg Pignataro. The Cardinals got on the scoreboard late with a goal by Joey Falleni at 86:55.
"We really under estimated North Central's fight,” said Carthage coach
Steve Domin. “We should have known better, as there are no days off in this league. They were spending a ton of energy early and late in the match, but Steve Korosis' goal off a dribble to a perfectly-placed shot from top of the box really settled things down in the first half. We really have caught the injury bug the last three or four games and now finding new ways to plow through with our depth. With the bench emptied, coupled with a handful of questionable corner kicks and fouls late, there were some fireworks in the final minutes. I think it's a sign of a good team in not having our best night but finding ways to win against a team that has been ranked in the region.”
Carthage plays host to non-conference opponent Lake Forest College (11-2-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in a 7:30 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
