The Carthage College men's soccer team (4-4-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened play at the Carthage “Battle on the Border” on Friday night, Sept. 23 with a 5-1 win over Spalding University (1-6-0) at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
The Golden Eagles took an early, 1-0 lead on a goal by Trevor Bruner at 2:50. The Red Men's
Vladimir Schlageter (Sr., St. Charles, Ill./North) knotted the score with an unassisted goal at 36:03. Carthage scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Greg Pignataro (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) scored on a penalty kick at 55:00, and
Billy Hamilton (So., Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) scored at 78:10.
Michael Dombrowski (Fr., Johnsburg, Ill.) connected on his fifth season goal at 82:55, with
Rafal Zalewski (Sr., Schiller Park, Ill./Franklin Park-East Leyden) closing out the scoring with a goal at 84:54, assisted by Mark Markovic. The Red Men out-shot the Golden Eagles, 37-3.
"It was nice to air it out a bit,” said Carthage coach
Steve Domin. “I give a lot of credit to the Spalding goalkeeper and all their kids for staying behind the ball. I think we just out-manned them tonight. We're a little banged up, and we used some different players in this game.”
Carthage continues tournament play on Saturday night, Sept. 24 with a 7 p.m. contest against No. 8 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (5-1-1). The Red Men conclude the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 25 with a 4 p.m. game versus Clarke University.
