The Carthage College men's soccer team (3-4-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) nipped Concordia University (Wis., 4-4-0), 2-1 in overtime, on Monday, Sept. 19 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
The Red Men took a 1-0 lead in the first period on an unassisted goal by Greg Pignataro (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs). The Falcons tied the contest in the second period on a goal by Zach Lemler, assisted by James Kroll, at 54:30. Carthage scored the game-winning goal at 95:13 in overtime when Michael Dombrowski (Fr., Johnsburg, Ill.) connected on a header, assisted by Pignataro. The goal was Dombrowski's fourth of the year. The Red Men out-shot the Falcons, 11-6.
“Both teams were playing their third game in five days,” pointed out Carthage coach Steve Domin, “and it really showed. Concordia is a quality program with a handful of dynamic players, which is why they've been ranked consistently in the Central Region. Once again, we felt we had the game in check, and possibly could have added a few more goals before half, but wound up needing the extra time to get the result.”
On Friday-Sunday, Sept. 23-25, the Red Men play host to the Carthage “Battle on the Border,” also at Art Keller Field. Carthage plays Spalding University (1-5) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., No. 8 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. and Clarke University on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
