The Carthage College men's soccer team (1-3-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) Carthage went 1-1 at the Rutgers-Newark “Raider Classic” at Alumni Field in Newark, N.J. The Red Men opened tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a 2-0 loss to Drew University. On Sunday, Sept. 11, Carthage shut out the host-Scarlet Raiders (4-1-0), 2-0.

In the Rutgers-Newark contest, the Red Men scored once in each period. Taylor Pignataro (Fr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) scored the first-period goal, unassisted, at 39:43, and Kevin Hilgart (So., Geneva, Ill.) scored in the second half at 87:18, assisted by Rafal Zalewski. The Scarlet Raiders out-shot the Red Men, 21-18.

“It has always been our philosophy to play the most-competitive schedule in country, on the road and in hostile environments,” said head coach Steve Domin. “This year, with a new team, nothing is different, and it's a challenge we accept. It's been a great two weeks at two top soccer destinations. We trained at the Home Depot Center, home of the U.S. national team in Carson Calif., and the team was invited to train alongside the Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham and London Donovan. We saw the national team play Costa Rica. All that was culminated by being able to represent Carthage at the World Trade Center site during the Sept. 11 weekend in New York City.”

Carthage plays host to Robert Morris University (Ill., 2-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 14 in a 7 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
